Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJD) affect your jaw joint and the muscles in your face.
You might feel pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide. Your jaw might also get “stuck” or “lock” in the open- or closed-mouth position, and you might hear clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew.
Our approaches to managing TMJD are very conservative, and can include a night guard, self-administered physical therapy (jaw exercises, posture improvement, ice and Heat therapy, and massages), and lifestyle changes. This can be supplemented with anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants.
